In early August 2022, flash floods soaked Furnace Creek in Death Valley, the driest place in North America. In just three hours on Aug. 5, 2022, a thousand-year rainfall event dropped 75 percent of the local average annual rainfall, which is just under 2 inches (5 centimeters).
