Painting the Growing Season in the Maize Triangle

by | Jun 2, 2026

A colorful radar image from South Africa’s Maize Triangle is providing a new look at one of the country’s most important agricultural regions. The image, created using data from the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission, highlights crop conditions and land-cover patterns across a region that plays a critical role in national food production.

The Maize Triangle spans parts of the Free State, North West and Mpumalanga provinces and produces a significant share of South Africa’s corn crop. Unlike optical imagery, radar can collect data through clouds and regardless of lighting conditions, allowing scientists to monitor agricultural activity consistently throughout the growing season. Variations in color across the image reveal differences in crop development, vegetation structure and land use.
