False-Color Image of South Korea

by | Feb 20, 2018

In honor of the final days of the 2018 Winter Olympics, this false-color image shows Pyeongchang county and the surrounding territory in South Korea currently hosting the event.

This is a view of the northern part of the country, with vegetation in red and built-up areas seen in gray, including capital city Seoul astride the banks of the Hangang River (left). Pyeongchang county is located toward the east coast. Mountainous regions are seen dusted with snow.

The image was collected by the European Space Agency Proba-V satellite, which maps land cover and vegetation growth across the entire planet every two days. Its main camera's continent-spanning 2,250-kilometer swath width collects light in blue, red, near-infrared and mid-infrared wavebands at 300-meter resolution and down to 100-meter resolution in its central field of view.
