UTC Aerospace Systems TERPROM to Equip Australian Defense Force PC-21s with Advanced Terrain Navigation

by | Jun 13, 2016

CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 13, 2016– UTC Aerospace Systems’ terrain referenced navigation (TRN) system, TERPROM®, has been selected by Pilatus Aircraft Ltd (Switzerland) to equip the Australian Defense Force (ADF) PC-21 next generation training aircraft.  UTC Aerospace Systems is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

TERPROM® is a proven navigation solution currently in use with 14 nations on more than 5,000 aircraft worldwide.  At its heart sits the TRN function which delivers accurate, drift-free navigation even where GPS is denied. Using on-board sensors and a loaded digital map, TERPROM® provides reliable ground collision avoidance and obstruction warning without any forward electronic emissions.  Whether operating in poor visibility, a GPS denied environment or at low level, TERPROM® greatly increases situational awareness, allowing the pilot to more effectively manage any mission.

“This combination of ground-based and airborne TERPROM® software allows us to support our customer, Pilatus, in delivering world-class pilot training to the ADF,” said Kevin Pindard, managing director, UTC Aerospace Systems Sensors and Integrated Systems. “With this innovative technology already in use on the Australian jet trainers, there is commonality for crew across training systems.”

The TERPROM® software will equip all 49 ADF PC-21 aircraft, providing trainee crews with drift-free terrain referenced navigation, predictive ground collision avoidance and obstruction warning and cueing. UTC Aerospace Systems will also provide Pilatus with simulator software for the ADF’s ground based training equipment.

The work is being performed by UTC Aerospace Systems’ Atlantic Inertial Systems Limited business in Plymouth, U.K.
