Esri Workbook Emphasizes Image Processing Capabilities of ArcGIS

by | Nov 19, 2013

Redlands, Calif., Nov. 13, 2013”Making Spatial Decisions Using GIS and Remote Sensing: A Workbook is the first student workbook to focus on the image processing capabilities inherent in Esri's ArcGIS software. Designed to complement remote-sensing textbooks in an undergraduate curriculum, the workbook teaches students image processing and analysis skills with ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop.

This book exposes students to image analysis, used by geographic information systems (GIS) professionals studying climate change, agricultural assessments, forest degradation, and more. Remote-sensing skills are important when the area of study is too large for ground-based measurements.

The book requires some prior GIS knowledge but employs step-by-step instruction throughout its 10 modules with activities that reinforce the key concepts of remote sensing including image enhancement, the creation of color composite images, and spectral signatures. Independent projects that encourage students to solve problems using local data are also included in the workbook.

A DVD with Landsat imagery and other data is included with the workbook, as well as a 180-day license to use ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Advanced software. Instructor resources are available.

Authors Kathryn Keranen and Robert Kolvoord have collaborated on other Esri Press books, including Making Spatial Decisions Using GIS: A Workbook (Esri Press, 2011). Keranen is an instructor at James Madison University and the cofounder of its dual-enrollment Geospatial Semester. Kolvoord is a professor at James Madison University, where he also serves as interim dean of the College of Integrated Science and Engineering.
