Jeff McKenna Wins 2016 Sol Katz Award for Community Leadership

Jeff McKenna, the past president of the OSGeo foundation and the co-founder of the international FOSS4G conference, was honored on Friday with the 2016 Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software during closing ceremony of the FOSS4G-2016 conference in Bonn, Germany.

The award is presented in recognition of Jeff’s deep passion for FOSS4G and relentless effort to promote the OSGeo Foundation around the world. He has been involved in OSGeo since the foundation was formed in 2006. The OSGeo Foundation wishes to thank Mr. Jeff McKenna for his dedication and invaluable contributions towards furthering the goals and objectives of the OSGeo Foundation.

Jeff says: “Today, it isn’t about one company or one standard or one software for geomatics, it is about being open and sharing. Finally, the world gets it. My thanks goes out to the entire community, to my world-wide family, for this recognition.” Watch his short acceptance speech here.

The prestigious Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software is awarded annually by OSGeo to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the community. Recipients of the award have contributed significantly through their activities to advance open source ideals in the geospatial realm. The award both acknowledges the work of community members, and pays tribute to one of its founders, Sol Katz.
