SMC Activates Remote Sensing Directorate

Military and civilian officials display the new directorate's emblem during a recent activation ceremony at Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif.

The U.S. Air Force's Space and Missile Systems Center recently activated a new organization called the Remote Sensing Systems Directorate. The directorate integrates the Overhead Persistent Infrared Space Systems and Defense Weather Systems directorates to increase efficiency.

“By merging two world-class acquisition teams, we intend to deliver ground-breaking new products and leverage existing and planned national security space platforms to create more affordable and resilient capabilities, said Col. Mike Guetlein, the new organization's director. We believe there are meaningful operational efficiencies and cross-platform synergies that will yield operational benefits to our warfighters.”

The integration is expected to improve warfighter support and keep space systems affordable. The new directorate will provide missile warning and defense, battlespace awareness and technical intelligence as well as environmental and space and terrestrial weather monitoring.
