U.K. Aerial Firm Completes Comprehensive Tree Map

by | Nov 13, 2012

Aerial mapping firm Bluesky produces tree maps used by local authorities and utility companies, and it's seeing interest from insurance companies and forestry organizations.

Aerial mapping firm Bluesky has compiled the first countrywide 3-D map of English and Welsh trees, complete with detailed modeling of tree heights and canopy cover.

The map was created by assembling overlapping aerial photographs and infra-red data, and then using mathematical algorithms to map every tree and derive the height and extent of its canopy”a proprietary technology the company calls ProximiTREE.

The technology can provide a better understanding than basic aerial photography, such as allowing tree data to be mashed with air quality, urban heat or flood risk maps. According to Bluesky, the digital map layer for the whole of England and Wales will be available early next year, and the company also plans to cover Scotland.
