Oberpfaffenhofen, July 6, 2015”The tremendous amounts of data produced by the European Earth observation programme Copernicus and its Sentinel satellites open the door to countless products and applications in a wide array of business sectors.
The annual Earth monitoring competition, the Copernicus Masters, was initiated to support visionary entrepreneurs to bring their innovations in the application of satellite Earth observation data to market.
Satellites have a huge potential to help design more sustainable cities. The global population continues to rise, placing demands on critical infrastructure and increasing the need for sustainable development across the world's cities. Intelligent transport solutions and smart city initiatives offer a way to reduce this burden and improve quality of life.
The Smart Cities and Intelligent Transport Challenge is therefore looking for innovative solutions that use satellites to take advantage of this real and growing opportunity.
Participants are encouraged to combine Earth observation imagery with in-situ data (e.g. near-real or real-time information on traffic, pollution, social behaviour, crowdsourced data and city development) to create an innovative product or service. Submissions should include and informative plan for the idea, how it might be realised, and the data sources involved. Entries are welcome from individuals, start-ups or established businesses.
The winning proposal will be awarded a Catapult business support package (valued at EUR 10,000) tailored to the requirements of the entrant. In addition, the winner of the challenge is automatically entered into the overall Copernicus Master award “ with the chance to receive (along with their challenge prize) EUR 20,000 in cash and a satellite data package worth a further EUR 60,000, which is being provided with the financial support of the European Commission.
The Copernicus Master Smart Cities and Intelligent Transport Challenge by the Satellite Applications Catapult is open for online submission until the 13th July this year.
All winners will be announced on 20 October 2015 during the awards ceremony held in Berlin.
