New Crowdsourced Forest Maps Offer Unique Insights

Austria’s International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) mapped global forest cover with its crowdsourcing Geo-Wiki team. The new maps show the location and extent of forests for ecology, climate change and economic modelling as well as provide insight to researchers looking for the best reference information to estimate deforestation and forest degradation.

Automated Satellite Imagery Analysis Aids Rural Development

Researchers at MIT recently teamed with a group of data scientists to automate the evaluation of satellite imagery to identify houses and types of houses, saving considerable time and funds on the field work that precedes rural development programs. The tool can be used to fill in the gaps of poorly mapped rural areas to determine the best place for pilot programs or villages suitable for solar power projects.

Antarctic Ice Shelves Rapidly Thinning

Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography recently reported that Antarctica’s floating ice shelves have decreased in thickness by as much as 18 percent during the past two decades. Satellite radar altimetry mission data from the European Space Agency were used between 1994 and 2012 to determine the change.
