fairdale_tornado_tracks_1950-2015

This map of historical tornado tracks in northern Illinois from 1950 to 2014 shows that the track and intensity of this storm was rather rare.

fairdale_tornadoThe aftermath of an EF-4 tornado that swept across northern Illinois can be seen in this Landsat 8 image acquired April 10, 2015. Evidence of the tornado appears as a line scrawled across the landscape where vegetation was damaged and soil stirred up.

The farming community of Fairdale was directly in the storm’s path, but the twister faded away just a mile northeast of the town. According to news reports, the tornado injured 20 people, destroyed 70 homes and killed two people.
