This Landsat 8 image shows Mongolia’s capital, Ulan Bator. The city sits in the valley of the Tuul River, which runs from the upper right corner to the lower left corner of the image. The Bogd Khan Mountain National Park is in the center of the image.
The capital is located in the greater Eurasian Steppe, which stretches from Moldova through Siberia and is characterized by grassland, savannah and shrubland. The steppe is also part of the discontinuous permafrost zone, with some areas frozen year round and other areas thawing for weeks and months.
