Timmons Group Redesigns and Implements New Find Wildlife VA Application

by | Sep 8, 2016

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) recently partnered with Timmons Group to redesign and implement the new Find Wildlife VA application.  VDGIF has distinct users, such as hunters, wildlife viewers, anglers, and boaters that require targeted information. The new mobile-friendly website contains targeted landing pages to these user groups to allow the agency to better service them and streamline their experience using the application. By creating designated paths through the site for each user group, VDGIF can deliver relevant content and tailored information based on these communities of interest.  The final product is an enhanced user interface with multiple landing pages specific to user interests.  From hunting and fishing, to bird watching, users are able to filter their search and are provided valuable data based on search criteria.

To complete the project, Timmons Group analyzed the existing version of the application and spoke with numerous users and subject matter experts to understand the underlying issues and desired outcomes. Timmons Group utilized its user interface and user experience (UI/UX) experts to model the application based off specific user stories.  Find Wildlife VA has taken our previous Find Game application to the next level, said Jim Husband, VDGIF's GIS/Data Science Team Leader. The improved interface and focused landing pages makes it easy for our users to navigate based on their primary interests and allows us to present focused information to the public.

The application leverages VDGIF's Enterprise GIS repository and is mobile friendly and compliant.  The application will work on smartphones and tablet devices in addition to desktop devices.  Timmons Group was proud to collaborate with VDGIF on this important project.  Making the data that VDGIF works extremely hard to produce readily accessible to the public will greatly enhance the use of our valuable and exceptional natural resources in Virginia, said Lowell Ballard, Director of Geospatial Solutions for Timmons Group.

The site will be presented by Lowell Ballard at the upcoming 70th Annual Conference of the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA) in October 2016.
