Longitude Announces Offering of Rare Soviet Maps of U.S. Cities

by | Jun 29, 2016

MINNEAPOLIS – Longitude Maps is announcing the sale of historic U.S. city maps developed by the Soviet Union military.

Developed in the Cold War era, the maps were part of an undertaking by the Soviet military to record the entire world, and featured a then-unprecedented level of detail and accuracy, including street width and building-types. In fact, the documents are so precise that they are still used to place international boundary lines on official U.S. Government maps.

Despite nearly 30 years since the creation of new content, the maps remain a source of fascination and intrigue for collectors, historians and city planners, among others. A recent Wired Magazine article highlights the lengths many have gone to in-order to procure the previously highly-confidential maps.

Maps of various United States cities are available at a 25,000:1 scale as individual sheets or series for selected cities with additional cities of the world obtainable upon request. The maps are often used for wall art or to enhance a collection.
