Unmanned Aircraft Zooms in on Sea Grass, Coral Reefs


According to MLB CEO and founder Dr. Stephen Morris, the Bat 4 UAS is perfectly suited for monitoring near-shore environments, providing repeated long-duration, low-flying mission capabilities safely and reliably.

Unmanned aircraft maker MLB Company finished a high-resolution assessment of sea grass and coral reef carbon dynamics to better understand the vulnerability of near-shore environments.

During a nine-day period, MLB’s Bat 4 unmanned aircraft system (UAS) successfully flew six flights in Class G airspace in the area of Sugarloaf Key (7FA1) Airport in the Florida Keys. The UAS captured nearly 3,700 images with a fully integrated pretesting multispectral camera system.

According to MLB, the Bat 4 is well suited for scientific research applications, with a 20-pound payload to carry the required sensors and up to 10 hours of flight duration, which provides ample time to gather a sufficient supply of data for analysis.
