Los Angeles recently received two Draganflyer X6 drones from Seattle police after that community expressed overwhelming opposition.

The Los Angeles City Council recently instructed the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to draft a policy for drone use, addressing safety and privacy. The process will include several public hearings that allow the public to provide feedback.

LAPD pioneered the use of manned helicopters for safety, traffic monitoring and even long-range incident monitoring, such as in the infamous O.J. Simpson white Bronco chase. Drones are used in cities around the world for a variety of applications, including law enforcement surveillance, crowd control and emergency response.

LAPD recently received two Draganflyer X6 drones as gifts from Seattle police, who abandoned their own plans for drone use after overwhelming community opposition. The receipt of the drones precipitated L.A.’s policy discussions. The two drones have been secured and won’t be used prior to working out the use policy.
