On April 29, 2004, as a service and tribute
to the 16 million men and women who served in the U.S. armed forces
during World War II, the National World War II Memorial opened for
public viewing—exactly one month prior to the formal dedication
ceremony took place May 29, 2004. DigitalGlobe collected a submeter
QuickBird satellite image of the monument on May 24, 2004. The image
features the 7.4-acre memorial situated on Washington, D.C.’s
National Mall between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington
Monument.
The memorial’s plaza encompasses the recently restored Rainbow Pool,
which has been located there since the 1920s. The plaza is
surrounded by 56 17-foot-high stone pillars that represent the U.S.
states, territories and the District of Columbia at the time of the
war. Two 43-foot arches mark the north and south ends of the plaza.
