Solve Problems with the Best I.D.E.A.S.: Intelligent Data Exploration and Analytics System

by | Oct 12, 2011

I.D.E.A.S. allows users to discover and access data and models from a variety of data repositories.

The SI Organization and partners Global Marketing Insights and GCS Research, along with a commercial high-performance computing facility, have found a way to reach the masses with a user-friendly, easily accessible system for satellite data and operational models.

Finding the Right Geospatial Data and Models

Due to the proliferation of satellite data, consumers have a difficult time locating and accessing data and models to solve problems. The Intelligent Data Exploration and Analytics System (I.D.E.A.S.©) systematically addresses these user challenges through intelligent computer responses and guidance rather than the hunt and hope process offered today through numerous Web sites.

Visualization and Analysis Power

I.D.E.A.S. consists of a Web-deployed storefront, smart engine and high-performance cloud (HPC) computing backbone. The system allows users to discover and access data and models from federated repositories, such as NASA and other U.S. agency data repositories, as well as available model repositories. Innovative methods for data and model discovery, learned workflows for discovery based on users' problem sets, and access and management are used to provide near-real-time Modeling as a Service (MaaS) services. These MaaS services take into account model set up, calibration, utilization and product generation. Model revisions and user collaboration are also part of the I.D.E.A.S. concept.

On-Demand Services for Unique User Needs

I.D.E.A.S. will allow users to discover and use satellite and airborne data and models to generate value-added solutions and products for societal benefit. The focus of the initial application is to provide an end-to-end capability for water management solutions for drought estimation and prediction. The I.D.E.A.S. drought management solutions will demonstrate the applicability of using NASA and other Earth-observation data for drought estimation and prediction for agriculture. In particular, the first area of study will manage terabytes of data in a near-real-time, on-demand product environment that allows users to investigate and predict droughts for pasture lands and the resulting effect on grazing animal mortality in arid climates. I.D.E.A.S. also will provide MaaS for vegetation, drought estimation and regression modeling.
