IKONOS Marks 50th Anniversary of First Mt. Everest Ascent

To commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the first ascent to the summit of Mt. Everest, Space Imaging released a high-resolution IKONOS satellite image and 3-D fly-over of the world’s tallest mountain. On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first men to ever reach Mt. Everest’s summit.  Since then approximately 1,200 men and women have made the daring journey to the top of the 29,035-foot mountain. The image has been rotated for better viewing; north is down. For a different perspective, view the 3-D flyover.
